OCEANIA / AUSTRALIA – Global Mission Sunday Campaign supports the work of nuns in Thailand with children in need

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) – The Pontifical Missionaries in Australia (“Catholic Mission Australiaâ€) appealed for donations for the work of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Thailand for the World Mission Month campaign in October. In a crèche, the nuns mainly take care of children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds. “Each year, the penultimate Sunday in October is consecrated as World Mission Sunday and it is a formal reminder of the importance of mission work,” said the national director of the Catholic mission, Fr. Brian. Lucas, in the note sent to Fides. “We can only speak of what we have seen and heard, and our baptism calls us to be missionary disciples. Through prayer and material support, we reach out to mission churches, those who are persecuted, fragile and lack the resources we often take for granted, “said Fr. Lucas. The Kindergarten Center, headed by Sister Chalaad and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, was opened to care for the children of women working at the Good Shepherd Sisters Fatima Training Center – a vocational training workshop for women from disadvantaged backgrounds – the Kindergarten has grown to accommodate local children who would otherwise miss out on a crucial preschool education.
“Most of the children in the center come from poor families in the area,†Sister Chalaad explains, citing Samorn and her five-year-old Kusa as an example. Samorn did not finish primary school, taking a full-time job at just 12 years old. Like all parents, Samorn wants Kusa to succeed and have more than she grew up: “I want my daughter to finish school, I want her to be able to support herself in the future”.
In kindergarten, every child has a safe space to access education, health care and nutritious meals. It also provides a foundation for children to develop positive self-esteem in an environment where they can learn and grow safely. Kindergarten can accommodate more than a hundred children.
“We can see that education is important. If the children have the chance to study or to prepare well for school, it will be very good luck for them. In the way I work with the children , I can see how children can be good people in the future â€.
The main goals of kindergarten are to help children in difficult circumstances receive age-appropriate educational support, a safe space to learn and grow, and to create a collaborative relationship with families for better childcare. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 9/14/2021)
