Tasmanian political leaders heard from young people in Tasmania on how best to achieve reconciliation between aborigines and white Australia at a Youth Speakout. Reconciliation Tasmania Project Leader Marnie Ritz said the event gave students the opportunity to voice their thoughts on reconciliation to elected officials. This included MPs including Prime Minister Peter Gutwein, Labor leader Rebecca White and Greens leader Cassie O’Connor, as well as Tasmanian Governor Barbara Baker. “The students are going to be the next generation of people to help the healing process within the Aboriginal community and I look forward to some of them growing up to serve as Prime Minister and Governor, and really radical changes.” said Ms. Ritz. “Student perspectives seem to be so much more advanced and progressive … in-depth reflections on what it means to reconcile the plight of Indigenous peoples.”
