New Delhi, December 24

As neither the United States nor China would be able to exercise an undisputed primacy in the Asia-Pacific region, India and Australia would be very substantial countries whose actions would constitute the marginal difference in the balance of powers.

Economic dialogue

India and Australia should seek practical and imaginative ways to strengthen their relationship, for example by establishing a high-level strategic economic dialogue. Michael Fullilove, Executive Director, Lowy Institute of Australia

Michael Fullilove, executive director of the Lowy Institute of Australia, said this here on Friday as he virtually delivered the second Atal Bihari Vajpayee lecture.

“But we will have to step up,” he said while calling on the two countries to consider new practical and imaginative ways to strengthen the relationship, such as establishing a high-level strategic economic dialogue and improvement of interoperability between the two defense forces, in particular in maritime domain knowledge (MDA).

Fullilove also called for an increased level of consultations and information sharing between diplomats and the intelligence community, cooperation in infrastructure financing and revitalization of the trilateral partnership with Indonesia and Japan.

In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that the essence of Vajpayee’s approach to international relations is evident in his effective responses to global changes. With the United States, he introduced political corrections reflecting the end of the Cold War, maintained stable ties with Russia, founded ties with China on mutual respect and benefit, and attempted to persuade Pakistan to sponsor cross-border terrorism.
