AEMO names a new EGM from System Designs

Australia’s Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has appointed a new Executive Managing Director, System Design, who will lead the organization’s industry-wide efforts to address the challenges of a clean energy system zero.

Ms. Merryn York has been appointed Executive Managing Director, Systems Design, joining AEMO effective March 14, 2022.

A highly experienced leader in the energy sector, Ms York joins the AEMO from the Australian Energy Markets Commission (AEMC) where she is currently a Commissioner.

Prior to joining AEMC, Ms York served as Managing Director of Powerlink Queensland from 2011 to 2019.

Having started her career as a power systems engineer, Ms. York brings deep industry experience in generator connections, transmission planning, regulatory investments and the delivery of major transmission projects.

Ms. York has also championed delivering results for customers as the energy industry moves to net zero, establishing a consumer panel and board-approved customer charter at Powerlink.

In Ms York’s current role as Commissioner, she has been extensively involved in the sector.

AEMO CEO Daniel Westerman said, “I am delighted to have someone with Merryn’s experience joining the AEMO Executive. I would also like to express my gratitude and thank Nicola Falcon, our Chief Forecasting Officer, for stepping into the role following the departure of Alex Wonhas.

Ms. York holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering, a Masters of Engineering Science and a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Law from the University of Queensland.

She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a Registered Professional Engineer and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors course.
