Victorian opera in Australia will present “Voss” for the first time in 50 years.

The showcase will take place on August 4, 2021 at the Théâtre du Palais; the opera, written by composer Richard Meale and librettist David Malouf, will be presented in association with the Australian National Academy of Music.

The opera is based on the famous 1957 novel by Patrick White, which focuses on German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and his journey through Australia. Audiences will have the chance to see baritone Samuel Dundas as Voss with Emma Pearson as Laura.

“Voss explores the many overlapping notions of Australian identity, which have developed and changed dramatically since its inception in 1986,†said artistic director Richard Mills, who will be one of the main creative forces behind the project. “The opera is a major work of the Australian imagination, the richness of which allows many opportunities for rediscovery and questioning.

“The opera invokes the uniqueness of our country and, in conclusion, offers the possibility of salvation through attention to the spirit of the land and its ancient lineage. The opera is of continuing relevance to the evolution of our national narrative. ”
