An Australian Defense Force (ADF) contingent has returned to Lekutu Secondary School in Bua, Vanua Levu, to complete the reconstruction of the school which was damaged during the height of Cyclones Yasa and Ana.

This was confirmed by Fiji’s Minister for Defense and National Security, Inia Seruiratu, in response to a question in Parliament earlier this week about how the Vuvale partnership had benefited the relationship between the military forces of the Republic of Fiji and the Australian Defense Forces.

He said that as part of the Vuvale partnership with Australia, Operation Assist under the Australian Defense Force (ADF) continued support to recovery efforts following the destructions of Cyclone Yasa and Ana, they were initially involved in the reconstruction of the Galoa primary school in Bua.

He said Galoa Primary School is the feeder school for Lekutu Secondary School.

“They (ADF) are also in the process of rebuilding Lekutu Secondary School and as we speak we have the ADF engineers back at Lekutu Secondary School for the completion of the project, which they started last year and the timeline according to the OC briefing for me last Wednesday is that they hope to complete this by the end of July,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“We have this 33-member rebuild team currently working with RFMF engineers as we speak.”

The ADF team tasked with rebuilding damaged schools was just one of the examples he noted of the benefits of the Vuvale partnership, and added that the Australia/Fiji partnership had contributed greatly to his defense force – “a testament of our close-knit defense family”.
