British police have arrested a 38-year-old man suspected of murdering teacher Sabina Nessa in London.

Ms Nessa was killed on September 17 in Kidbrooke, south-east London.

Detectives believe she was attacked during what would have been a five-minute walk in a local park on her way to a friend’s house in a pub.

The murder of the 28-year-old in London has raised new concerns about the safety of women walking the streets of the capital.

A 38-year-old man was arrested today at an address in Lewisham, south London on suspicion of murder.

He was taken into custody where he still is, police said.

London Metropolitan Police have also released footage of a man they want to speak with.

CCTV shows the man walking on Pegler Square in Kidbrooke on the day Ms Nessa was attacked.

Police also released an image of a silver vehicle that they believe the man had access to.

The police are asking anyone who recognizes the man and the vehicle to contact them immediately.

Chief Detective Inspector Neil John of the Metropolitan Police said: “We would ask anyone – especially those in Kidbrooke and the wider Lewisham and Greenwich area – to take a close look at these footage to see if you know who this man is or if you have seen these last days.

“Any information on her identity or whereabouts could be vital to our investigation, so we ask that you share this image on a large scale to ensure that as many people as possible see it.”

Ms Nessa’s body was discovered nearly 24 hours after her death in a local park by a member of the public.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder, but was released under investigation. The results of an autopsy performed on Monday were inconclusive.

A spokesperson for the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson authorities said authorities are recruiting more police officers and introduced a strategy to tackle violence against women and girls earlier this year.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called violence against women a national “epidemic”.

“We have to give this problem the same seriousness that we take other problems,” he told ITV.

More than 180 women have been killed by men across England since March 2020, he added.

“Sabina’s journey should have taken a little over five minutes, but she never reached her destination,” Detective Inspector Joe Garrity said.

“We know the community is rightly shocked by this murder – as are we – and we are using every resource at our disposal to find the individual responsible.”

A vigil must be organized in memory of Mrs. Nessa this evening.

A cousin of Ms Nessa told the BBC that the parents of the 28-year-old were “inconsolable”.

Lisa Williams, the principal of Rushley Green Elementary School where she worked, remembered Nessa as “brilliant”, “kind” and “caring”.

The case arose just months after the kidnapping, rape and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard in south London by a policeman on duty.

The Everard affair shocked the country and saw thousands of people take to the streets to denounce violence against women.

Khan said he believed violence against women and girls should be taken more seriously.

“I think it deserves the same priority as the fight against terrorism. I agree with the inspector who called it an epidemic,” he said.

The mayor also mourned the deaths of sisters Bibaa Henry, 46, and Nicole Smallman, 27, both of whom were murdered in a park in Wembley, north London, by Danyal Hussein, 19, in June 2020.

Safeguard Minister Rachel Maclean told the House of Commons on Wednesday: “This is a government that passes legislation, sets actions and tackles these horrific crimes and we are determined to see them reduced.
