Industrial Action tomorrow Thursday 8^th September

 The New South Wales Teachers Federation have directed its members to engage in industrial action in the form of a strike on Thursday 8^th September in response to the NSW Government NSW Government’s new law that caps employer-funded pay increases at 2.5 per cent a year when cost of living increases are running at 3.6 per cent a year.

 Under this law to receive pay increases of more than 2.5 per cent a year, the new law requires employees to pay for them from their conditions of work. In education, this would mean a cut in the number of teachers and less support for individual students. Also, unlike every non-public sector employee in NSW, we can no longer argue for an increase before an independent umpire. This is a pay cut in real terms when measured against the rising cost of groceries, electricity, gas, council rates, rents, mortgages, petrol and other essential items in the household budget.  As a consequence of this direction to its members, Australia Street Infants School will not be running any classes or prior to school programs such as Pre-School, or Lennox House on Thursday 8^th September 2011.

 Practically this means that the school will cease normal operation for the school day. Parents are required to organise alternative care arrangements for their children for Thursday 8^th September.

 Please be aware this includes no string beans ensemble or individual lessons running tomorrow.

 Whilst there will be small number of staff on site, only minimal supervision can be provided. I ask that all students do not attend school unless absolutely all alternative arrangements for care are exhausted.

The 23rd of  March is our Gran-Friends Day celebration. It commences at 11:00am with a special assembly, open classrooms, book sale and picnic lunch in the playground. We encourage as many of our families to attend our celebration as possible! Some come along!

Newtown Public School’s  orientation morning is tomorrow. It is a program for both parents and students. Parents may wish to elect to go directly to Newtown Public School Hall and meet us there or alternatively walk down with us at 9:00am. The program will run for approximately one hour from 9.30 am to 10.30 am. All students who are not enrolled to attend Newtown Public School will be supervised at Australia Street Infants School for the duration of the orientation program.

Today we have launched our Australia Street Infants School Annual School Evaluation Survey for 2010.  We ask that all families commit the time to complete the survey as this will help us gain a broad picture of our school. The data collected is anonymous and will be used to inform whole school planning as well as for our Annual School Report. Throughout the survey there are a three compulsory comment boxes marked with an * and a number of optional additional comment boxes. As you would be aware, we have negotiated the outsourcing of uniform sales to our supplier Primary School Wear (PSW).  They have a retail premises in Kingsford located at 395 Anzac Parade, Kingsford which parents can visit or more conveniently are offering an online ordering and delivery service available from the new Uniform Shop Link on our main page.

Retail sales commence from this week so if you require any uniform items please; follow the link on the main page to the PSW online ordering page, visit the retail store or see Heather in the front office for more information.

The annual Battle of the Bands is scheduled for this Sunday in Sydney Park, St Peters. It is going to be a huge event with 16 bands battling ot out for rock supremecy! This aside there will be a Kids Air Guitar Competition along with a range of kids events  and sausage sizzle organised by the Friends of Sydney Park.

Please join us on Friday for a healthy breakfast to help us kick off our active day of learning and skipping! Our breakfast will commence in the preschool playground from 7.30am till 8.30am and will consist of porridge with milk, honey and strawberries, or a delicious museli made by one of our super mums! (Ingredients of the museli are listed below for your information). Parents and siblings are welcome to join us and everyone is asked to bring a reusable bowl and spoon and a plastic bag to put your dirty dishes in!

Karate and Yoga activities will be available in the playground for everyone to participate in from 8.15 – 8.45am.

Wet Weather: If the weather forecast is grim, we will advise you of a postponement on Thursday afternoon.

Museli Ingredients: rolled oats, bran sticks, puffed rice and millet, shredded coconut, cinnamon, mixed spice, honey, sunflower oil, dried fruit (sultanas, apricots etc)
Porridge will be cooked using cows milk.

The Australia Street Infants School COLA has just been awarded a commendation in the 2010 NSW Architecture awards as officiated by the Australian Institute of Architects, NSW Chapter.

The COLA was up against 210 outstanding projects and took out a commendation for the small project catagory.

This award is an outcome of our strong community in partnership to deliver the very best outcomes for our school community, an achievement we can all share.
